Fabrice Sergent, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of music and concert site Bandsintown, spoke at Design Driven in September 2019. He sees design as a way to create lasting bonds between artists and fans. Sergent discussed how awareness is one of the key blockers preventing artists from maximizing live performance revenue, and that Bandsintown spent two years developing an alert and recommendation system that would lead fans to buy tickets on a whim. It was a successful blend of data and design, merging the constellation of data points about users with engaging user experience. “Half of the fans on our site buy tickets to shows that we recommend,” Sergent said. “We also have 50% of users buying concert tickets for bands they haven’t heard of before,” a testament to how effective Bandsintown’s discovery engine has been.
